Olympic Games

The Olympic Games are the world's only truly global, multi-sport, celebratory athletics competition. With more than 200 countries participating in over 400 events across the Summer and Winter Games, the Olympics are where the world comes to compete, feel inspired, and be together. The Olympic Games are normally held every four years, alternating between the Summer and Winter Olympics every two years in the four-year period.

London 2012 Olympics – 2012 (London/United Kingdom)

The 2012 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XXX Olympiad) and known as London 2012 were an international multi-sport event held from 27 July to 12 August 2012 in London, England, United Kingdom. 10,768 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in the 2012 Olympics. The Games were officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The 2012 Summer Olympics featured 26 different sports encompassing 39 disciplines and 302 events. The Chef De Mission of Maldives contingent for the Games was Hussain Rasheed, the treasurer of Maldives Olympic Committee. Flagbearer at the opening ceremony of the Games was Ajfan Rasheed from Badminton Association of Maldives. Ajfan Rasheed is the first athlete to have qualified for the Olympic Games.

Rio 2016 Olympics – 2016 (Rio/Brazil)

The 2016 Summer Olympics officially the Games of the XXXI Olympiad were an international multi-sport event held from 5 to 21 August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Around 11,000 athletes from 205 nations took part in the 2016 Games, including first-time entrants Kosovo, South Sudan, and the Refugee Olympic Team. With 306 sets of medals, the Games featured 28 Olympic sports, including rugby sevens and golf, which were added to the Olympic program in 2009. The Chef De Mission of Maldives contingent for the Games was Hussain Rasheed, the treasurer of Maldives Olympic Committee. Flagbearer at the opening ceremony of the Games was Aminath Shajan from Swimming Association of Maldives.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics – 2020 (Tokyo/Japan)

The Tokyo 2020 Games showcased the evolution of the Olympic programme, introducing new sports and events that strengthened the timeless appeal of the Olympic Games for a new generation. Tokyo

 

 

2020's 339 events in 33 sports were the most in Olympic history and included the Olympic debut of sports such as skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing and karate, as well as events such as BMX freestyle and 3x3 basketball. The games took place in Tokyo, Japan from 23rd July to 8 August 2021. The Chef De Mission of Maldives contingent for the Games was Ahmed Munthaqim, from Athletics Association of Maldives. Dual flag-bearers for the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq from Badminton Association of Maldives and Mubal Azzam from Swimming Association of Maldives. Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq competed at the Olympics under the Tripartite Commission invitation awarded to her, making her the first female to have qualified for the Olympics. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics was the first of its kind where all the participating countries had dual flag bearers at the opening ceremony, as it was urged by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to support its gender equality agenda.
