MOC Holds Discussions with FIDE President on the Future Development of Chess in the Maldives

The Maldives Olympic Committee (MOC) held a productive meeting with Mr. Timur Turlov, the recently elected President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), to discuss the future development of chess in the Maldives and explore opportunities for closer cooperation between the two organisations.

MOC Vice President Ahmed Ismail and Secretary General Thamooh Ahmed Saeed participated in the meeting, which focused on strengthening the governance and administration of chess in the Maldives, supporting the ongoing governance transition of the Maldives Chess Federation, and identifying opportunities for the sustainable development of the sport.

A key area of discussion was the governance transition of the Maldives Chess Association, particularly the importance of establishing a transparent, fair and credible electoral process. The representatives exchanged views on the need for strong governance structures, accountability and institutional stability to ensure that the Federation is well-positioned to serve the interests of its members, athletes and the wider chess community.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of establishing a strong administrative foundation that would enable the Federation to operate effectively, strengthen stakeholder confidence and create a stable environment for the long-term growth of chess in the Maldives.

Beyond governance matters, the meeting explored opportunities for closer collaboration with FIDE in expanding chess development programmes in the Maldives. Discussions included potential initiatives aimed at strengthening technical and administrative capacities, supporting the development of players and creating greater opportunities for participation and advancement within the sport.

Digitalisation was another important area of discussion, with both parties exchanging views on how digital tools and modern administrative practices could contribute to the development and management of chess. The potential for enhancing the visibility and role of chess within the wider Olympic Movement was also explored.

MOC expressed its sincere appreciation to Mr. Turlov for taking the time to engage in these discussions and for sharing his perspectives on the future development of chess.
