The Maldives men’s beach handball team delivered a strong and determined performance against Asian powerhouse Qatar in their final match of the Asian Beach Games 2026, currently taking place in Sanya, China.
Coming up against one of the continent’s most dominant teams—multiple-time Asian champions and World Championship finalists—the Maldivian side showed resilience and competitive spirit throughout the match. Although Qatar secured victory in two sets (26–12, 18–12), Maldives remained highly competitive, particularly in the second set.
After a challenging opening set, the team responded with a much-improved display in the second, taking an early 6–4 lead and later drawing level at 10–10. The match remained closely contested for a significant period before Qatar pulled ahead in the latter stages to seal the win.
Throughout the tournament, the Maldives team has demonstrated notable progress and consistency. The team opened their campaign with a win over Bangladesh and followed up with another victory against Mongolia, while also putting up strong performances against higher-ranked opponents.
Individually, Mohamed Rihan Ibrahim led the scoring with 10 goals, while captain Mohamed Shamnooz Naeem added 6 goals to the tally.
Despite the result, the performance against Qatar reflects the team’s growing competitiveness at the Asian level and highlights their potential for continued development in future international competitions.
