Maldives Contingent Makes a Vibrant Entrance at Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony
On July 26th, Team Maldives made a memorable entrance at the Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony, proudly showcasing the unique culture and vibrant spirit of the Maldives. Held at the iconic Stade de France, the event was a celebration of diversity and unity, with the Maldivian team making a significant impression on the global stage.
Leading the Maldivian contingent were flag bearers Fathimath Dheema Ali, a distinguished table tennis player, and Ibadulla Adam, a talented athletics sprinter. Both athletes carried the national flag with pride, symbolizing the nation's aspirations and unity.
The Maldivian athletes donned traditional attire, reflecting the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Maldives. Female athletes wore the Dhivehi libaas, a traditional garment adorned with exquisite kasabu viyun embroidery on its borders and neckline. This vibrant attire, typically in hues such as red, green, or blue, is paired with a feyli underskirt and often accessorized with thick gold bracelets, a "fahtaru" necklace, and a "rumaa falhi" hair bun cover. Male athletes wore the feyli, a traditional piece of clothing wrapped around the lower body, complemented by the fosha, a white garment worn on the upper body.
The Maldives' participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics is a significant achievement for the island nation, underscoring the athletes' dedication to representing their country with honor and determination. The opening ceremony marked the beginning of an exciting journey for the Maldivian contingent, as they prepare to compete against the world's best athletes.
