The historic journey of the King’s Baton through the Maldives commenced on 6 December 2025 in Vaavu Fulidhoo, marking a significant milestone in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland. The launch ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, Abdulla Rafiu; the President of the Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) Maldives; and the British High Commissioner to the Maldives, His Excellency Nicholas David Low, who jointly set the Baton on its symbolic path.

The event began with the official unveiling of the uniquely Maldivian Baton, a handcrafted wooden piece adorned with cultural motifs inspired by traditional stone carvings, alongside depictions of iconic ocean life including manta rays and sea turtles. As highlighted in the remarks delivered by CGA Maldives President Mohamed Abdul Sattar, the Baton embodies the nation’s identity, celebrating both its cultural heritage and deep connection to the ocean.

Following the unveiling, the celebration transitioned into a meaningful community activity as officials, Parley Maldives, the Island Council, and Fulidhoo residents joined together for a large-scale beach clean-up. This initiative echoed the Commonwealth’s Clean Oceans Plastics Campaign, reinforcing the Maldives’ enduring commitment to marine conservation. In his speech, President Sattar underscored the significance of this effort for a nation whose future is inseparably linked to the health of its surrounding waters.

The programme reflects the core values of the Commonwealth unity, sustainability, cultural pride, and the power of sport to inspire collective action. By bringing together local leaders, youth, volunteers, and community partners, the launch in Fulidhoo demonstrated the Maldives’ dedication not only to the global sporting movement but also to safeguarding its natural heritage.
