In celebration of Olympic Day 2023, three different atolls in Maldives (Meemu, Noonu and Raa Atoll) M. Muli, N. Velidhoo and R. Ungoofaaru hosted a series of events to promote the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect. The highlight of the celebration was the Olympic Day Run, which saw a total of approx. 500 participants taking part in the afternoon of 23 June 2023.
In addition to the run, participants also engaged in traditional Maldivian sports, including
Dhafi negun, a game played with a ball made from coconut fiber. The game involves two teams of five players each, who try to score points by throwing the ball into a small hole in the ground.
The celebration was organized by the island councils of the islands, supported by the Maldives Olympic Committee. The event provided an opportunity for the people of the islands to come together and celebrate the Olympic Values while promoting physical activity and healthy living.
The event served as a reminder of the positive impact that sports can have on individuals and communities, and the importance of promoting physical activity and healthy living.
